My biggest AI breakthrough this year came from a session that wasn't even supposed to happen. At Social Media Marketing World, one of our speakers got injured and we suddenly had an open room. So I grabbed Molly Mahoney, we jumped on stage, and started a live conversation with the audience about AI assistants. And as people asked questions, something clicked. I realized we needed to differentiate between an assistant and an agent. An assistant is something you work with. An agent is something you give work to — something you delegate to. Talking it out loud with a room full of people, the dots started connecting in my brain. I understood it at a deeper level than any newsletter, YouTube video, or podcast could take me. When I got home, that seed kept growing. "I wonder if I can give these AI tools whole tasks. I wonder if they can do really powerful things for me." Sure enough, they could. An unplanned discussion planted a seed that grew into a tree I couldn't ignore. Now I'm out here experimenting with agentic AI.
