My daughter came home convinced she'd scored a vintage Michael Jackson cassette tape. She held it up all proud. It was an 8-track. I showed her an actual cassette and said, "That's not a cassette tape. This is a cassette tape." Her response? "Dad, I want to buy an 8-track player." I said, "Don't." She did anyway. Drove to some woman's house, paid $25, and came home with an old Electrophonic player. Then realized she needed speakers too. When I asked her why she was going through all this trouble, she said something that stopped me: "Dad, don't you get it? With all this AI stuff going on, there's a move to go back to the olden days. To simpler times." And I started thinking — maybe she's onto something. Maybe that's exactly what I've been doing. Sitting on my front porch, birds chirping, just talking. Is it possible we're overthinking things? Maybe all we really need to do is focus on getting a message out there that connects with people. There's a reason vinyl and old-fashioned tech are making a comeback. There was something simple about it. And something really cool about it. So here's my question for you: what are you overthinking? What are you making more complicated than it needs to be? Maybe we can go back to the God-given gifts we have to love and connect with other people. This is Thoughts from the Porch.
